Another admirable change

Following a complaint received from Buddhist devotees, the Knowing Buddha Organization learned that Nanzoin Temple in Japan had been selling reclining Buddha-shaped cookies within the temple grounds as souvenirs in a manner considered inappropriate and inconsistent with the respect traditionally accorded to Buddhist symbols.

The organization attempted to locate the temple’s email address and Facebook page but was unable to find any direct online contact information. Communication appeared possible only through in-person contact at the temple or by telephone. As a result, the organization researched the manufacturer of the product and identified an online store in Japan operating under the name Sasaguri Pilgrimage Design Store, which is affiliated with the temple. The organization then sent a letter explaining the concerns and providing information to foster a proper understanding of the respectful treatment of Buddhist symbols in accordance with Buddhist principles.

Shortly after receiving the letter, Sasaguri Pilgrimage Design Store demonstrated sincere concern regarding this sensitive matter. The company acknowledged and appreciated the guidance concerning the appropriateness of the product and did not ignore the issue. Instead, it promptly reviewed the matter and removed all related posts and product links immediately.

The swift and sincere response by Sasaguri Pilgrimage Design Store serves as an admirable example of an organization that values public feedback and is willing to adjust its practices in a manner that respects cultural and religious values.
